Banana growing project in Haiti

2018.12.19 //

The Foundation, together with the Congregation of the Petits Frères, finances the acquisition of banana seedlings and the training for 270 farmers in Beauséjour, to improve their family income.

Belonging to the municipality of Léogane, it is one of the most remote and isolated rural areas of Haiti, with a high level of poverty and in which the inhabitants practically live on subsistence agriculture.

The Congregation of the Petits Frères de Sainte Therese has been working in this area for more than 20 years, taking care of the health and nutrition of the peasantry and continuously thinking about how to improve their living conditions.

That is why, a few months ago, they asked our Foundation for a grant, to purchase banana seedlings, and the resources needed to boost their production among the families of the community.

Currently, the banana represents a high percentage of the food consumed by the population; therefore, it represents a very promising future in most rural areas of Haiti, as well as an important source of income for farmers.

Thanks to the contribution of the Barceló Foundation, which amounts to 17,339 USD, 20 banana cuttings have been purchased for each of these 270 families that, through the macropropagation technique, will see how in 3 months these seedlings have doubled. Some may dedicate it to enrich the diet of their families and the rest to sell it to obtain a much-needed income.

One of the main objectives of the Foundation, within its possibilities, is to contribute to the economic development and improvement of the living conditions of the most needy populations, especially in Haiti, one of the poorest countries in the Americas.
